A field-proven deployment by Boldyn Networks and GRUNDIG Security shows how resilient 5G connectivity and intelligent video security can work together in one of Italy’s most challenging coastal settings.
Ponza, the largest of the Pontine Islands off the coast of Lazio, is known for its natural beauty, busy harbour areas and strong seasonal tourism. With a permanent population of around 3,300 residents and visitor numbers rising sharply during the summer months, the island presented a demanding real-world environment for a modern Safe City deployment. The result: a fully integrated 5G surveillance network designed to support public safety in key areas while respecting the island’s protected landscape.
The Municipal Administration of Ponza selected directly Boldyn, with Grundig as the technology provider, requesting a non conventional video surveillance approach.
The project had to address several factors at once: geographically remote and coastal locations, high tourist density during peak season, the need for real-time video transmission, and a solution architecture that could scale for future smart city services. At the same time, the deployment needed to keep its visual impact to a minimum in a sensitive natural environment.
To meet these requirements, Boldyn Networks and GRUNDIG Security delivered a fully integrated Safe City solution combining resilient 5G connectivity with advanced video security technology. The deployment uses GRUNDIG Security equipment with UHD imaging, AI-driven video analytics and weather-resistant design, connected via Boldyn’s neutral host 5G network infrastructure. The result is a connected surveillance ecosystem capable of supporting both daily operations and future expansion.
In a project like Ponza, connectivity is not just a technical detail – it is the backbone of the entire security concept. 5G enables reliable uplink performance, low latency for live monitoring, support for broader camera deployments and a scalable platform for future development. It also helps connect hard-to-reach areas more effectively than older wireless approaches and supports modern video applications such as high-resolution streaming and remote analytics.
The Ponza deployment marks an important milestone: it demonstrates that 5G-powered video security is not a future concept, but a practical and field-proven approach for demanding public safety environments. By combining network expertise and video security technology, Boldyn Networks and GRUNDIG Security created a strong reference for Safe City projects in locations where conventional infrastructure can be more difficult to implement. This first phase already covers key public areas including the main port, marina, waterfront promenade, public squares and major intersections.
“Ponza is a clear example of how innovative 5G infrastructure can overcome geographical constraints and deliver real value to communities. Together with local Public Administration and GRUNDIG Security, we created a reference model for Safe City deployments that can be replicated across many other challenging environments.”
Antonino Ruggiero, CEO, Boldyn Networks
“The Safe City project on Ponza proves that 5G-powered security is no longer the future — it is the present. Our cameras performed flawlessly in one of Europe’s most demanding coastal environments, and we are proud to have contributed to a safer community.”
Andrea Zoffoli, CTO, GRUNDIG Security
Projects such as Ponza show what becomes possible when advanced connectivity and professional video security are designed as one integrated solution. For municipalities, operators and infrastructure stakeholders, this creates new opportunities to improve situational awareness, strengthen public safety and build scalable foundations for future smart city services.
